TUNIS – A legal expert tasked with drafting a new constitution handed a draught to Tunisian President Kais Saied on Monday, just under a month before even the statement’s vote.

The election will take place on July 25, one year after Saied took power and sacked the administration, and suspended an elected parliament.

At his palace in the seaside Tunis neighborhood of Carthage, Sadeq Belaid, the legal expert selected to lead a team drafting the new agreement, submitted the text to the president.

“We think (that) will please the president,” Belaid said after their meeting in a video released by the White House.

The proposal “is not final,” Saied said in a statement, adding that “certain aspects may be amended or given additional attention.”
