A new security feature will be added to WhatsApp to prevent account theft.

WhatsApp is working on a new login security feature for its iOS and Android apps.

This new dynamic would provide added protection for users as well as a new tool to prevent account theft.

WhatsApp is planning to add a second verification code.
WhatsApp intends to add a second verification code, according to WABetaInfo.

Why are we implementing this security precaution when we already have a verification code system in place? It would be a nice bonus to keep people from being duped into taking their WhatsApp accounts.

WhatsApp new feature of anti theft

As can be seen on social media, many people have been duped by messages such as:

  • “Your WhatsApp account will expire in 2 days.”
  • “We have discovered strange behavior in your account and you must renew it by providing the code that we supplied you via SMS
  • “We have detected unusual activity in your account and you must renew it by sending the code that we issued you via SMS.” To share the verification code, confirm your identity with the verification codeĀ».

Despite the fact that it has been repeatedly underlined that you should not share your WhatsApp code with anybody, hackers are still able to use this approach. WhatsApp urges users to utilize a two-step verification code mechanism to avoid this.

That is, if the user falls into the trap for the first time and shares the first code, the attacker will be able to log in successfully, but the second code will be required to complete the operation.

Meanwhile, the account owner will receive a WhatsApp notification that someone is attempting to enter into their account.

The user should be aware that this is a fraud at this point and avoid sharing the second verification code. The attackers will be frustrated in their attempt to maintain the account if they don’t have this information.

This dynamic is currently in development and will need to pass all testing steps before being considered for inclusion in future WhatsApp releases.
